SMASH IN THE FACE = SMILEY FACE ?

The  front gate at our place is a mechanically operated slow swinging thing, that you have to wait a little few seconds for while it is lurching its way toward being open.

While standing there you have a few seconds to kill and I always amuse myself by watching the development of this little Stoppa that is getting smacked in the ‘face’ with every gate opening.

I am not sure how to pull an analogy out of this, but I am sure there is one there.

Something along the lines of :

“getting smacked in the face, can make you smile…”

or perhaps:

“keep smiling”

or something.
