I’ve several unusual past times. One I don’t mind admitting to, is drawing shoe portraits. Fate met fantasy a couple of months ago when Jo, the owner of my favourite Auckland shoe store Mei Mei, asked me to draw some of their new season styles. These are slightly dodgy screen grabs of them, but you get the idea.
Arriving in a giant van emblazoned ‘Henderson Rentals’ isn’t exactly how I imagined meeting one of my favourite bands, but there I was parked up at the airport trying my best to be nonchalant.
I can drive a truck. I did a stint a few years ago driving the wardrobe truck whilst costume designing Jaquie Brown Diaries and am still getting mileage out of the story. A small truck mind you - I don’t want to get myself into legal hot water - but big enough to fit a sink, two makeup chair stations and eight people standing.

It was the Sunday before the day I’d agreed with myself that I was going to start back at work. I’d had a month or so leisure and with Sunday Magazine’s break over, the approaching Monday was becoming hard to ignore.
The funny thing about this Sunday Mag cover, is that despite the fact Penny looks completely relaxed and sultry, she was getting eaten alive by a cloud of sand-flies at the time. Likewise Karen who took the shot. Consummate professionals the both of them.
I admit I’ve been slack over the past few weeks. Thing is, I’ve had many fun friends visiting home from Europe. I didn’t think you’d want to hear of my debaucherous frock wearing high times, nor Christmas with my family, which was fun, low key and relaxing, thanks.
