Furniture, Plan, Rival Brain

12 November 2011

This week we opened a new exhibition by Ruth Buchanan. Ruth has been based in Berlin for the past few years and before that she was at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. This show is Ruth's first solo in New Zealand since she left after her undergraduate at Elam in 2002.

Ruth works across a range of media including sculpture, video, performance, language, sound, graphics and slide projection. Recently Ruth’s work has proposed ‘meetings’ between herself and the practices of artistic precursors, in particular figures who have addressed the difficult passage from private to public (such as Virginia Woolf, Janet Frame, Flora Scales and Agatha Christie). These meetings act as departure points and could imply working intensely with, for example, an archival collection, architectural location or production format associated with a particular figure or scenario. Each work in the new show is the result of such an encounter or transformative ‘getting to know’ process.
