Prospect
29 November 2011On Friday Harry and I went to Wellington for the opening of Prospect: New Zealand Art Now at the City Gallery. This is the fourth in the series of Prospect exhibitions, a project that began back in 2001 with the aim of providing “the most ‘up-to-the-minute’ survey of contemporary art in the country”.
This year Prospect is curated by Kate Montgomery, who is one of the best young curators in New Zealand. There are 15 artists involved, and the exhibition promises to show New Zealand artists “producing some of the most thought provoking and confident work today.” The list includes Fiona Connor and Kate Newby – both represented by Hopkinson Cundy – as well as Ruth Buchanan, who has a show here at the gallery this month.
Kate has made a three works for Prospect - two outdoor work in the Square outside the gallery and a series of works that travel the exhibition in the pockets of the attendants. Fiona is showing an installation titled Notes on a Half Page, a body of work originally shown at Gambia Castle in 2008, and Ruth is showing a series of new and older works, including her film Several Attentions (2009).
Prospect is open from 26 November 2011 – 12 February 2012 and entry is free. If you are in Wellington over the summer I highly recommend a visit!
